FAIRHOPE –– Fairhope High School’s Haley Evans signed a scholarship to run cross country for the Montevallo Lady Falcons under head coach Michael Marquardt.
Evans earned all county honors in cross country ( three years) and track & field (two years).
In cross country she finished 86th, 66th, 51st, and 33rd in the state in her four state 6A meets and helped her team to three section championships and one county championship.
In track & field Evans qualified for state in the 800, 4x800 (2 times), and 3200.
This year she posted a 12:33 in the 3200 on an asphalt track and qualified to compete at the state meet in the 3200 and 1600. This, her senior season for Fairhope, Evans took seventh in the state in the 6A girls 3200 to wrap up her career at the state meet at Gulf Shores in May.
"Haley has worked harder than any other athlete I have ever coached," said FHS coach Tim Yahr. "By running extra miles when I suggest them. She has a high GPA in difficult classes and works hard to be a true friend to the people on the team. She and seniors Payton Tanner and Michelle Wright did a great job of leading the 2008 cross country team — leading by example in school, at practice, and in town. It is great to hear how athletes I have coached continue to run for fun or to compete in local races or marathons; but it is especially nice to have one go on to compete in college.
"I really have enjoyed keeping up with Reah Lee at UAH and Katie Jorgensen at UAB and it will be exciting to see how Haley continues to improve at Montevallo. Our loss is the Falcons' gain, but she has given Fairhope High School her best effort and so we send Haley on to Montevallo with our prayers and gratitude."
