Fairhope Public Library celebrates its 125th anniversary

Posted

The Fairhope Public Library turned 125 on April 22.

To celebrate the library's anniversary, the library held a special event, where guests were treated to a variety of flowers arrangements, cakes and lemonade referencing the opening of the first library back in 1900. A slideshow was also played in the background featuring photos of several notable events in the library's history. Members of the staff spoke about how much the library has meant to them and the local community.

"I can't tell you how many times people have said this is the most wonderful library in the world," library director Rob Gourlay said.

During the event, officials revealed newly renovated spaces located on the second floor to guests, including a revamped teen section and a maker space featuring a brand-new 3D printer. Gourlay said this new space is important for investing in the next generation of library readers.

Library board member Anne Johnson thanked city leaders for their support over the years and also recognized long-time library director Tamara Dean, who retired in 2024, and the volunteer support group Friends of the Fairhope Public Library for helping shape the library into what it is today.

Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan was also in attendance, saying she is proud to see the library grow over the years and talked about how it has become a notable part of the community. She also revealed that the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation is working on renovating the site of the old Fairhope Public Library location on Magnolia Avenue.

"It really is a community resource and a community hub for everybody in our community," Sullivan said. "Thank you to the people who made that possible."

More anniversary festivities are planned, according to the library's social media. As part of the celebration, the library is also posting a staff-nominated "Book of the Decade" each month in correspondence with the 12 decades the library has been active.
