Fairhope police stop potential threat at high school

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - A Fairhope High School student was taken into police custody Tuesday night on suspicion he planned to bring a gun to school and harm other students today, according to a Fairhope Police Department news release.

Police were alerted March 8 that a friend of the 17-year-old male FHS student had “learned that (the suspect) was planning to obtain, or attempt to obtain, a weapon to bring to class” on Wednesday, March 9, with the “alleged intent to physically harm several classmates,” according to the FPD release issued Wednesday morning.

Police took the juvenile suspect into custody at his parent’s home last night, but no gun was found on the premises, the release stated.

“As a protective measure, several officers were present on campus when school began this morning,” the release stated. “Classes began as normal with no incidents being reported.”

Because all students involved are juveniles, names cannot be released, according to police.

“Investigators will work closely with the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office to ensure the case is handled in a manner that is best for both the community and the juvenile,” the release stated.
