AUBURN, Alabama — The Fairhope Pirates rallied from a two-touchdown deficit and stunned No. 9 Auburn with a two-point conversion with 23.2 seconds left in the game to win an AHSAA Class 6A first round state playoff game on Friday.

Trailing 42-35 with 49 seconds left, Nate Andrews returned an Auburn kickoff 30 yards and the Tigers were called for a facemask, giving Fairhope the ball at the Tigers 31. Senior quarterback Chase Domino hit Andrews on three consecutive passes, including a 13-yard touchdown pass with 23.2 left to play. Domino then hit Tanner Martin on a swing pass to the left to convert the winning two-point conversion.

Fairhope (9-2) coach David Faulkner said he put the two-point conversion decision on the backs of his seniors.

"The seniors, a couple of them came over and said 'let's go for two.' So I called them all over and asked them what they wanted to do. I said 'it's your team,' and they wanted to go for it," Faulkner said. "We gave them a play and they went out there and executed."

Domino led the PIrates on an 8-play, 69-yard drive capped by a 35-yard quarterback scramble for a score early in the fourth quarter. Domino was chased out of the pocket and dashed to the end zone, shaking Auburn defenders and diving across the goal line with Tiger defenders on his back.

"Chase is just a winner," Faulkner said. "When you build your team around your quarterback you better have a winner there, and I thought both teams did tonight. Chase does a tremendous job for us. He will be the first to tell you that it took all of us. It was just a great effort by our whole team."

The Tigers grabbed a two-touchdown lead at 34-21 after a 13-play, 80-yard drive to start the second half. Quarterback Cameron Echols-Luper scored on a 1-yard rush to cap the drive. Echols-Luper later hit Patrey Hardnett for a touchdown and scored a two-point conversion that gave the Tigers a 42-35 lead with 49 seconds left.

Domino finished completing 11-of-17 passes for 178 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He rushed nine times for 72 times and a touchdown. Andrews had two rushing touchdowns, one touchdown catch and the crucial kickoff return in the fourth quarter. Tanner Martin rushed for 86 yards, Alex Sealy had a touchdown catch and Brent McDonald had a touchdown run in the win.

"All the credit really goes to our kids and our coaches, they just battled their butts off," Faulkner said. "We had a great week of preparation and we knew we had a big task ahead of us and what an excellent team that Auburn has. Our kids just hung in there and kept battling and battling."

Fairhope hosts No. 10 Blount (10-1) on Friday in the second round.
