ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Fairhope Pirates varsity football team remained perfect in 6A Region 2 action Friday night topping the Robertsdale Golden Bears 35-20 at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale.

The Pirates scored on their first five posessions then held off a late surge by the Golden Bears to go to 5-1 on the season, 4-0 in Regional action, while the Bears fell to 3-3, 1-3 in Regional play.

Fairhope quarterback Chase Domino threw two touchdown passes, while Tanner Martin and Nate Andrews each caught a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the first half as Fairhope jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the contest.

After holding the Bears to three-and-out on the opening drive of the game Fairhope went 69 yards in 15 plays to take an early 7-0 lead.

Domino connected on 6 of 7 passes on the drive for 51 yards and Martin rushed four times for 9 yards and Andrews added two rushes for three yards including the final yard for the score.

Fairhope converted on two fourth down plays to finish the drive, drawing Robetsdale offside on a fourth-and-two play to put the ball at the 9, then Andrews ran the ball in from a yard out on fourth down.

It would become the theme of the first half as the Pirates converted on four of four third down attempts and five of five fourth downs.

Fairhope would convert three of three fourth downs on its next drive marching 60 yards in 19 plays after once again holding Robertsdale to three-and-out on defense.

Domino connected with Martin on a 16-yard strike to convert a third-and-9 into Bear territory at the 43, then the Pirates faked a punt on fourth-and-3 with a four-yard run by Andrews to the Bear 32.

Domino connected with Martin again on fourth-and-14 for a first down to the Robertsdale 22 and Martin ran for three yards on fourth-and-2 to set up a first down at the Bear 11. Three plays later, Fairhope scored, converting another third down with a seven-yard strike from Domino to Andrews and Nick Cutrone chipped in his second extra point of the night to give Fairhope a 14-0 lead with 8:30 remaining in the half.

Again Fairhope held the Bears without a first down and again they were able to score, but a short punt left them with good field position at the Golden Bear 42 and three plays later Martin scored on a 27-yard run with Cutrone's extra point giving Fairhope a 21-0 lead with 5:04 left in the opening half of play.

Robertsdale's offense would come to life behind the running of junior quarterback Hunter Vaughn, who ran two plays for 13 yards from the Bear 35 to near midfield then hit Jovaris Jones for a 29-yard strike all the way to the Fairhope 4-yard-line.

Vaughn took the ball in himself from there and Colby Norman added the extra point to cut the lead to 28-7 with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter.

But Fairhope came right back scoring exactly a minute later with Domino hitting Martin on a short swing pattern and Martin raced down the sideline untouched for a 55-yard touchdown. Cutrone's extra point gave the Pirates a 28-7 lead with 1:27 left before the half.

Fairhope then scored on its opening drive of the second half, going 80 yards in 16 plays, again converting on three third down attempts and one fourth. Domino took the ball himself on a nine-yard run for the score and Cutrone's extra point gave the Pirates a 35-7 lead with 4:25 left in the third quarter.

Vaughn again led the charge for the Bears, going 80 yards on 11 plays, taking the ball himself on six plays and using two Fairhope penalties on the drive. Vaughn took the ball in from seven yards out and Norman's kick made the score 35-14 with just 12.9 seconds remaining before the final period.

Fairhope punted for the first time in the game after gaining one first down on the ensuing drive, but got the ball right back after Willie Woodyard picked off Vaughn at the Pirate 45.

Fairhope would drive from there all the way to the Bear 1-yard line, but could not convert as Robertsdale stopped Martin for a one-yard loss to take the ball back at their own 2.

The two teams traded punts from there with Robertsdale using all three of its timeouts on Fairhope's final drive to get the ball back with just under a minute to play.

Vaughn orchestrated one last drive, hitting Tyler Vaughn on a 23-yard strike, then spiked the ball to stop the clock at the Pirate 42, hit Jarrod Mack for a 17-yard gain, stopping the clock again at the 25 before connecting with Forrest Hammond in the endzone for the score.

There was no time left for an extra point, however, as the game ended with a 35-20 Pirate victory.

Martin ended the game with 131 yards on 23 carries to lead the Pirate rushing attack. Domino completed 17 of 25 passes for 205 yards for Fairhope.

Vaughn was a one-man show for the Bears, rushing 17 times for 79 yards and two scores, while completing 7 of 18 passes with one interception for 87 yards and a score.
