Fairhope Pirates beat Daphne, stay unbeaten in Classic play

DAPHNE, Alabama — Taylor Gradle’s hit in the top of the seventh inning broke a 1-1 tie to put Fairhope ahead of Daphne for the final inning. The Trojans had come from behind in the fifth to tie it, but came up short with two men on in the final frame.

The win kept the Pirates undefeated in the BayBears Classic and put them in the elite round Saturday against McGill-Toolen Catholic at Hank Aaron Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

Hunter Ellenburg pitched five innings and left with a one run lead he generated on a single to score a pinch runner off Brock Gilheart’s single.

Daphne answered with a run in the bottom half when Tanner Lee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Quint Fields and Corey Childress closed out on the mound for the Pirates.

In the earlier game at Daphne, Bayside Academy outscored Gulf Shores 11-1 and advanced to the semifinal round with a 2-1 record in the Admirals’ first appearance in the tournament. Bayside will play Davidson Saturday at 9 a.m.

Hunter Slater had three hits, including a 3-run double, Kevin Masterson drove in two runs with a triple for the Admirals and Joe Stassen a double and two singles. Jordan Odom singled and Matt Walters drove him home in the fourth for the Dolphins. Owen Shivers also had a hit for GSHS. Greg Parker picked up the win for Bayside.

The other Saturday games include Robertsdale vs. Theodore at 11:30 a.m. and Faith Academy vs. Satsuma at 2 p.m. Daphne and Gulf Shores played Thursday at The Hank. Results were not complete in time for this printing.

The finals are set for 7 p.m. at The Hank. Fairhope is the three-time defending champion.
