FAIRHOPE, Ala. - On Saturday, Jan. 22, firearms instructors from the Fairhope Police Department will offer a free “Citizens Firearms Safety Class.” The class is being held from 8 a.m. to noon in the Delchamps Suite of the Fairhope Civic Center, 161 North Section St.

Corporal Brett Murray and Officer Fred King, both of whom are firearms instructors, will facilitate the class. Topics will include safe firearms handling, general firearms information, decision making tips on selecting a firearm and ammunition, general care and cleaning, and basic gun laws.

The goal of the class is to teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and using a firearm safely. The class is designed for new or inexperienced firearms owners, as well as persons considering the purchase of a firearm; however, the class is also open to experienced owners and shooters.

Firearm owners wishing to bring a firearm for specific guidance with their particular weapon may do so, but the weapon must be enclosed in a case and must be unloaded. Instructors will be inspecting each firearm for safety purposes; however, they will not be recording serial numbers or registering firearms. A firearm is not needed in order to attend the class.

Class space is limited to forty participants. Interested persons are asked to contact Corporal Brett Murray at 251-928-2385, or by e-mail at brett.murray@cofairhope.com, in order to register for the class. The class is offered on a first come/ first served basis. No unregistered walk-ins will be allowed.
