The Fairhope Film Festival will open its 14th annual edition with a U.S. premiere that puts mahjong at the center of the action.
“Luck My Life,” a Singaporean comedy directed by Eric Wong, will screen Thursday, Nov. 12, at Giddens Auditorium in Centennial Hall at Coastal Alabama Community College in Fairhope. The film will serve as the festival’s Opening Night selection and kick off four days of programming running through Nov. 15. An encore screening is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 15.
Starring Richie Koh, Tay Ping Hui and Cynthia Li, “Luck My Life” follows Zhuo Tian Cai, played by Koh, a man whose extraordinary luck at the mahjong table brings him fortune until he disrespects the game and loses it all.
With guidance from four mahjong masters and the woman he loves, Zhuo must relearn the game and discover some humility before facing reigning champion Gu Lei in a final match.
Billed as Singapore’s first film built around mahjong, the 103-minute comedy was one of the country’s major Lunar New Year releases after its Feb. 17, 2026, premiere.
The Fairhope screening will mark the film’s United States premiere, arriving as mahjong experiences a resurgence across the country. Social clubs, leagues and tournament nights are introducing the game to a new generation of players.
The film will be presented in Mandarin with English subtitles. Wong and producer Careen Tham will travel from Singapore to attend the festival and participate in an audience question-and-answer session.
“Luck My Life is a story of falling down, fighting back, and finding a way forward, set against the vibrant world of mahjong. We’re excited to host the film’s U.S. premiere,” said Stephen Savage, CEO of Fairhope Film Festival.
The 2026 Fairhope Film Festival will bring a diverse selection of films, filmmakers and special events to downtown Fairhope for its 14th year. The festival is scheduled for Nov. 12-15.
The full lineup, schedule and tickets will be available Oct. 15 at fairhopefilmfestival.org.
