Fairhope, Daphne renew Jubilee Cup rivalry on Friday

DAPHNE, Alabama — Game of the week? Some might call it that. But the Showdown on the Shore at Jubilee Stadium could be the game of the year — at least so far.

A three-way tie in the 6A Region 2 standings between the Pirates, Trojans and Foley Lions will be broken tonight. With the steady Lions a likely home-field winner over explosive but volatile Northview, either Daphne or Fairhope will join them at 5-1 at the top of the league. And barring unlikely upsets in the final week of region play, a head-to-head tie breaker could determine the region champ.

Head-to-head factors so far have Daphne with the overtime win over Foley and Foley with a comeback win over Fairhope.

Of course, calling the Jubilee Cup Game big is more than redundant most seasons. But 4-1 Fairhope at 4-1 Daphne, version 2012.0 should be a classic. With the Pirates’ Nate Andrews mending after their first region loss to Foley last week, his contribution may be limited to inspiration this week. But Fairhope’s offense also led by Bryan Bell, David Kirksey, Gabe Phillips and Rushing Watson along with a defense led by John Patrick Sherling will play with all-out determination. The Trojans’ only region loss came at the hands of Dothan, who along with Enterprise, is close behind the leaders at 3-2 in region play.

“Fairhope is always a big game for us,” said Daphne coach Glenn Vickery. “Coach Winegarden is doing a great job down there. They are loaded on offense with great players and a great scheme. (Gabe) Phillips is a very good quarterback. They have great running with Kirksey and Bell. On defense they will really play hard and sound in all areas because David Stapleton is a top notch defensive coordinator.”

Fairhope coach Adam Winegarden echoed the big game theme.

“Each game at this point are big for the region standings. There are several teams right there at the top and it is anybody’s game. We need to take advantage of our opportunity. Daphne has outstanding team speed and plays sound football in all three phases.”

The Trojans are led by multi-phase threat Jonathan McGaster rushing, returning and receiving, veteran senior quarterback T.J. Fleeton, wide out Chris Sain and Trey Jenkins on defense. Both teams have good kicking games and field-goal potential.

Winegarden also said that progress is made weekly and then measured game by game.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to improve as a football team on Friday night. We don’t feel like we have played our best football and are striving each day to accomplish just that. We have a lot of respect for Daphne and their coaching staff. They have done an outstanding job and their records speak for themselves.”

Kickoff at 7 p.m. Get there early.
