Fairhope City Council recap: corrected historic preservation ordinance to be introduced at next meeting

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - City Council President Lonnie Mixon’s announcement Monday, about his support for one year of free garbage service to residents, was possibly the top news at this week’s council meeting, but other items were considered.

In other business at the May 9 meeting, the council:

[] Heard Councilwoman Debbie Quinn’s request to establish and appoint an education committee to consider whether the city should form an independent school system.

“I’d like to see it come up at a work session,” Council President Lonnie Mixon said. “I think it needs some more discussion.”

The council decided to include the item on the May 23 work session agenda before the regular council meeting that night.

[] Withdrew the item regarding a proposed historic preservation ordinance from the regular council agenda, following the discovery last week that incorrect language had been included in the draft law, according to Quinn.

The council meeting followed an hour-long public meeting about the proposed ordinance, at which the majority of the audience, based on their applause, were against the proposal.

Quinn said a new draft ordinance would be introduced, probably at the next council meeting. Mixon stated there would be another public meeting or hearing prior to any vote on the proposed law.

Mixon also canceled the public participation agenda item on the regular council meeting, he said, because that proposed ordinance had been pulled from the agenda.

According to city staff, no other persons had signed up to speak on any other agenda item that night.

[] Reappointed the following four members to the Financial Advisory Committee, on Mixon’s recommendation: Stan Grubin, chair, Mayor Tim Kant, Mixon and Chuck Zunk; and one new member, Gail Gardner. Two current members were not reappointed.

Additional coverage of the May 9 council meeting, and the public participation meeting on the proposed historic preservation ordinance that day, will be posted online this week and published in the May 11 and May 13 editions of The Fairhope Courier.
