FAIRHOPE, Ala. - The Pirates took a homeport win with Hurricanes in town and tornado warnings in the region. Fairhope’s 37-6 Region 1 win over Alma Bryant secured a playoff spot with a top-tier finish in Class 7A, Region 1.
Luke Freer’s 37-yard field goal, Cyline Koen’s 48-yard rushing touchdown and a Riley Leonard-to-Dre Matthews pass went 59 yards for a TD to put the Pirates up 17-0 at halftime.
Leonard also had a 34-yard TD run, a 13-yard TD run and another TD pass to Matthews (52 yards).
“We’re just happy to get this big win here at home,” said Fairhope head coach Tim Carter. “I’m proud of the effort to get us our fifth straight win. We’ll celebrate tonight, but then get back to work for the next game.”
Next, the Pirates (6-3 overall, 5-2 region) face McGill-Toolen Catholic’s Yellow Jackets in Mobile at Bishop Lipscomb Field to wrap up the regular season. The Region 1 leading Jackets, led by former Spanish Fort head coach Ernest Hill, out stung Baker’s Hornets 42-14 to remain undefeated (9-0, 7-0).
With one week left in regular-season play, the Pirates are third in the standings with Theodore (8-1, 7-1) second. Murphy is in fourth place at 5-4, 4-3.
