Ex-Alabama football player highlights Eastern Shore's Mayors Prayer Breakfast

DAPHNE, Ala. — Thursday morning, mayors from across the Eastern Shore will gather at the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club and Spa to share thoughts for the National Day of Prayer. The 27th Annual Mayors Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, will begin at 7:30 a.m. on May 5.

“The purpose is to bring the community together in all three cities we represent for an inspirational and uplifting breakfast,” Kathie Barton, chamber spokesperson, said.

Mayor Fred Small of Daphne, Mayor Tim Kant of Fairhope and Mayor Joseph Bonner of Spanish Fort are expected to speak and welcome everyone who attends. The keynote speaker is John Croyle, former star defensive end for Alabama and executive director of Big Oak Ranch Inc. Big Oak Ranch includes three ministries — a boys ranch in Gadsden, a girls ranch in Springville and a Christian school in Rainbow City — that provide homes and education for more than 1,800 needy children since it opened in 1974.

Croyle is expected to talk about his experiences and the work he has done to improve the lives of children at the prayer breakfast.

“A hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of house we lived in, the kind of car we drove or how much money we had in the bank,” Croyle stated in a press release. “But the world may be different because you and I were important in the life of a child.”

The event, Barton said, will probably last about an hour and a half.

Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce at 251-621-8222 or 251-928-6387. All tickets for the event are $30. Tables of 10 seats can be purchased for $300 in advance of the event. All tickets must be picked up at the chamber’s locations in Daphne or Fairhope at 29750 Larry Dee Cawyer Drive or 327 Fairhope Ave., respectively.

Darrelyn Bender, the chamber’s president, sees the prayer breakfast as an opportunity to reflect.

“… It is a time for our business community to pause, be thankful for what we have and recognize the strength of working together,” she stated in a news release.

“The event will include a delicious breakfast and an excellent presentation from the keynote speaker,” Barton said.
