In workplaces across the United States, advocates for mental health are spearheading internal progress, influencing organizational change and proposing practices to better support the mental health needs of their workforce.
Among these advocates are ADT, Barilla, Chevron, CSAA Insurance Group, Kroger and numerous other employers who are at the forefront of the workplace mental health movement. In 2019, Mental Health America (MHA) introduced the Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health, a national certification program aimed at assessing and recognizing employers committed to fostering mentally healthy work environments.
The Bell Seal certification program, the first of its kind nationally, evaluates and rewards employers based on their dedication to creating supportive workplace cultures. Developed under the guidance of MHA, known for its extensive research and advocacy work, the Bell Seal program assesses various aspects of employer practices to ensure a holistic evaluation of the employee experience.
Collaborating with the Department of Labor (DOL), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and leading national companies, MHA is deeply committed to advancing worker safety, health and overall well-being. The Bell Seal program continuously evolves in collaboration with experts in workplace mental health, setting and refining standards rather than merely evaluating them.
Embracing MHA's B4Stage4 philosophy, the Bell Seal program aims to spotlight organizations taking proactive measures to address mental health in the workplace. Recognizing the dual benefit of fostering employee well-being and driving business success, the program underscores the importance of creating positive workplace environments.
To be considered for the 2024 Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health, organizations are encouraged to apply by Friday, March 29, through the MHA website at mhanational.org/bestemployers. Employers of all sizes and from various industries are welcome to participate, except those actively engaged in efforts that undermine the rights of employees with mental health or substance use conditions.
The application process is designed to be straightforward and transparent, with results typically provided within 30 business days of submission. Furthermore, Bell Seal recipients receive access to promotional toolkits and recognition across various platforms to celebrate their achievement.
By prioritizing mental health in the workplace, organizations not only foster healthier, more supportive environments for their employees but also contribute to a broader cultural shift toward destigmatizing mental health issues in society.
