FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Elvis may have left the building, but he’s headed to Ecumenical Ministries’ Chili for Charity cookoff this year. Tickets are on sale for the event, set for Saturday, Feb. 19, from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Oak Hollow Farm, south of Fairhope.

For the first time in its 11-year history, an Elvis tribute featuring colorful performer Shane Tucker will be included with the usual crowd pleasers, which include children’s games, mechanical bull rides, hay rides, homebaked goods sale, antique tractors and cars, Chick-fil-A and all the chili you can eat.

Elvis impersonators are invited to participate as well. It’s a half day of family fun and friendly rivalry.

Lori DuBose, popular WABF radio manager and on-air personality, will emcee the community event.

Last year, Riviera Utilities won rave reviews and took first place in the chili competition. Tom Byrne and the Riviera staff are poised to defend their title again this year while EMI is looking for other teams with great chili recipes to join the fun.

Em and Joe Johnson have again agreed to be the group’s $5,000 cookoff event sponsors. EMI welcomes other supporters at a number of levels.

Last year close to 3,000 attended the EMI event.

General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. A $30 ticket includes admission to the event plus a commemorative Tom Jones chili bowl. For a decade, Jones has donated more than 200 chili bowls to EMI each year for sale at the event.

All proceeds help support the many social service programs of EMI.

Winners of the cookoff, along with winners of the apron and booth decorating contests, will be presented coveted Tom Jones pottery prizes.
