GULF SHORES, Ala. — Before anyone can ask “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” on Thursday, put on your “Blue Suede Shoes” and head down to the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores for an evening with Elvis, or at least the best Elvis tribute artist in the area.
Foley’s Shane Tucker will perform a concert of Elvis’ fan favorites at 7 p.m. and it’s all to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
“If you’ve ever seen Shane perform, you’ll never forget it,” Relay Chairman Theresa Enfinger said. “He puts on a fantastic show of many of Elvis’ great songs.”
Enfinger said the Relay committee decided to sponsor this concert, but any tickets sold benefit the Relay team from which they were purchased.
“This is a way for our smaller teams to raise money with minimal effort. All they have to do is put tickets up for sale at their place of business,” she said.
Tucker, whose “day job” is an assistant principal at Foley High School, said he developed a love for music at a young age.
“I started singing in church as part of children and youth choirs and, eventually, began singing solos. This helped develop a love of music that includes many genres,” he said.
Tucker said country and southern rock music are his favorite secular music genres, but one performer stands out from the rest.
“Elvis is obviously my all-time favorite because of his captivating style and his powerful and unmatched vocal talent,” he said. “Performing as an Elvis tribute artist is my way of keeping Elvis' music and memory alive for those who remember him and introducing him to those who discovered him after his untimely death.”
Enfinger said tickets are just $15 each and may be purchased at 11 different locations in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.
Ticket locations in Orange Beach are: the City of Orange Beach finance office, Reflexions Hair Salon, TaTa Towing (Orange Beach Towing) and both locations of Columbia Southern University.
Ticket locations in Gulf Shores are: Meyer Vacation Rentals, BBVA Compass Bank, Thomas B. Norton Public Library, Gulf Shores High School office and the Gulf State Park campground office.
The 2013 Relay for Life will take place beginning at noon April 6 at Lake Shelby in the Gulf State Park. Enfinger said she wants to invite everyone to come out and enjoy the concert. “Virtually everyone has a friend or family member who has been affected by cancer,” she said. “This is a great way to have an enjoyable evening and raise money to help make this disease a thing of the past.”
