Elberta Public Library fully unveils historical display detailing town's past

Have you ever wondered what Elberta was like back in the day? Now you can find out through a display at the Elberta Public Library detailing the area's past.

On Sunday, May 31, the library unveiled the rest of its Foundation Hall display, which details the colonization, incorporation and history of Elberta. Photos were collected by librarian June Taylor that were either given to her or sourced from places such as the Baldwin County Heritage Museum. She is also working on a notebook that will feature even more information than what is included with the pictures, including stories people have told her and newspaper articles, including past articles from Gulf Coast Media's The Onlooker. Visitors will be able to read the notebook at the library once completed.

The display features rare photos of Elberta from the 20th century. For example, one frame shows the Elberta Glee Club, a men's choir group that featured Taylor's grandfather, Adoplh Ebentheuer, with many of their family also still residing in the area.

There are also many photos showing buildings as they were in the past. Some of the structures still exist today, such as Kiefer Grocery, later Miller's Grocery Store and Feed Store, located on the corner of State Street and Main Street where Davis Auto Parts now resides.
Other photos include Elberta's first mayor, John Miller, and first town council following the town's incorporation in 1952, along with photos from the 50th anniversary parade held on Oct. 9, 1954, commemorating the anniversary of the Elberta's founding.

"I had a good time working on this, and it's a pleasure that I can leave this for the town to enjoy for years to come," Taylor said.

The Elberta Public Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
