Elberta German Sausage Festival coming up Saturday

ELBERTA, Ala. — It’s time, once again, for the Elberta German Sausage Festival.

The semi-annual event will kick off at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Elberta Town Park, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and County Road 83 in Elberta.

“The Sausage Festival is a town fundraiser spearheaded by Elberta Volunteer Fire Department in 1978,” explained Festival Chairman Charlie Haupt.

Admission to the semiannual event is free. However, German sausage dogs and sauerkraut will be for sale, as well as additional concessions from area organizations, a kids zone with inflatables and activities, as well as vendors offering a variety of wares and more concessions for purchase.

Plus, live music will be performed on two stages. According to Haupt, including tunes paying tribute to Elberta’s German heritage, Heir Hurt and the Polka Dots and John, Jim & Jerry will alternate performing at the gazebo, while Dunatar and the Doc Johnson Band will grace the stage by the beer tent.

While the festival has traditionally ended around dinner time, Elberta VFD Public Relations Officer John Conti said this Saturday’s rendition will last a bit longer.

“They’re going until 9 p.m. now,” he said.

Conti explained that inspiration for the extended hours came from the Elberta Police Department.

“They liked what the Police Department did with the Elberta Wings Festival,” he said. “And they thought they’d try that, especially since they only have one day.”

The Elberta German Sausage Festival is set to take place, rain or shine.
