Elberta celebrates America's 250th at Town Park

ELBERTA — In central Baldwin, Elberta was among the first places in the county to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, holding its annual celebration on Thursday, July 2.

This year was the first time the event was held in downtown Elberta, with the celebration occurring at Town Park. It was organized by Elberta Community Partners with help from local officials. Mayor Steve Kirkpatrick called it a big effort, saying they started work on the event about six to seven months in advance with the fireworks budget having been increased in preparation for America’s 250th year of independence.

The day’s events included the dedication of a new addition to Town Park, donated to Elberta by Brightspeed; a performance by Gulf Coast Dance Connection; an America flag retirement ceremony from Boys Scouts Troop 70 and 170 of Elberta; a pie contest; live music from Elberta native Christina Crystal; and a fireworks display to conclude the night.

Kirkpatrick, an Army veteran, said having traveled to several countries, the United States “as far as I’m concerned, is the best country in the world.”

“There’s a lot of people that’s fought over the years to keep things free, protect our First Amendment [and] Second Amendment.” Kirkpatrick said. “I think when you get in the South, those things are important to the citizens and all. … I’m just glad to be here in this country where we can say what we want and do what we want.”
