Page & Palette announces an event with ultrarunner Scott Jurek to promote the paperback release of his new book “Eat & Run” on Saturday, April 6 at 4 p.m. The event begins with a 2-mile casual run starting in front of Running Wild located at 214 Fairhope Ave. Participants will meet back at Page & Palette at 4:30 for a juice tasting sponsored by Chasing Fresh Farmers Market and a book talk and signing by Jurek.
For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. And yet, perhaps even more impressive than his extensive list of race victories and course records is the fact that he achieves these astonishing accomplishments of endurance on an entirely plant-based diet. In his memoir “Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness, Jurek opens up about his life and career — as an elite ultrarunner and a vegan — and inspires athletes at every level.
In 1999, a 25-year-old complete unknown, Jurek took the lead in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile “jaunt” over the old Gold Rush trails of the Sierra Nevada. He went on to win that race seven years in a row, setting a course record along the way. He won the Badwater Ultra, a 135-mile race that traverses the bottom of Death Valley to the shoulders of Mount Whitney, at temperatures that can climb to more than 120 degrees. He triumphed three times in the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece, inspired by the route run by the ancient messenger Pheidippides.
Recently, Jurek set a new American record for running the most number of miles in a 24-hour period; he completed all 165.7 miles by continuously circling a .78 mile course in the French village Brive-la-Gaillarde. And he was one of the few elite runners who traveled to Mexico to run with the Tarahumara Indians, as profiled in the bestseller “Born to Run.” Jurek’s accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary, but that he has achieved all of this on a plant-based diet makes his story all the more so.
Chock full of incredible, on-the-brink stories of endurance and competition as well as accessible practical running advice and vegan recipes, “Eat and Run” will motivate people to go the distance, whether that means getting out for a first run, expanding food horizons, or simply exploring the limits of human potential.
