Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce presents five-year plan at Daphne meeting

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce on Monday presented its five-year Blue Print for a Better Tomorrow campaign to the Daphne City Council.

The commerce is asking the city to pledge $30,000, and the campaign aims to target economic development and workforce development, tourism and public and community affairs. The city pledged $30,000 in the commerce’s previous five-year campaign, campaign executive Patrick Brennan said.

Campaign chairman Joe Bullock said he thinks the campaign has been successful the past five years and he hopes the city will continue its support.

“I encourage you to work with us on this next program to continue the momentum we established over the last few years,” he said to city leaders.

The campaign aims to:

  • Create more than 200 jobs, around $400,000 in additional local tax revenue and more than $7.4 million in new payroll by using a program to train 750 students in work skills and adding at least 10 non-retail businesses in the area.
  • Generate up to $5.5 million in new tourism revenue and $200,000 in new tax revenue, and increase visitors to the Eastern Shore by 20 percent based on the possibility of a mega-sports venue in the area.
  • Reduce the waiting time for licenses and permits for developers and businesses in the Eastern Shore by creating a “one-stop shop”; educate at least 350 businesses and industries on “green initiatives”; and host environmental camps for residents to help maintain the area.
  • The chamber reported that the budget for 2011-2015 would be $1.75 million.
