Foley’s Earth Day will be celebrated on Friday with the first Earth Day Extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Graham Creek Nature Preserve.
The event is free, Lassitter said, and it will include a two-mile Fun Run at 9 a.m., Fire Department and Police Department activities, a water-testing demonstration, a tutorial on how to build a butterfly garden, eco-tours and a recycling station. There also will be kids games, hotdogs and water.
“We’ll be having activities all day,” Leslie Lassitter, city environmental manager, said. “The Police and Fire Department also will be out there doing certain demonstrations.”
The eco-tours will happen “every hour,” Lassitter said.
“The plants will be in bloom. It will be a nice day,” she said.
Mayor John Koniar read a proclamation at Monday’s city council meeting declaring Friday as Earth Day in Foley and acknowledging the upcoming event at the preserve.
He said the purpose of the event is to “promote environmental citizenship” in the area.
