SUMMERDALE, Alabama --- A suspect picked up Tuesday morning in Robertsdale on DUI charges is also wanted in connected with a burglary earlier that morning in Summerdale.
Richard Landon Jones, 18, of Fairhope, was picked up at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and is being held at the Robertsdale jail on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
Chief Eddie Ingram with the Summerdale Police Department said during a routine search of his car, Robertsdale Police found items believed to be taken from a break-in and robbery committed earlier that morning at Alligator Alley in Summerdale.
The burglary occurred at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, Ingram said. A man was caught on security surveillance walking around the Summerdale animal park, located off of Highway 59 behind Baldwin EMC, for several minutes.
“It appears that he had lost his keys and spent several minutes searching for them,” Ingram said.
Once the keys were located, the suspect fled the scene and a short time later, Ingram said, Jones was picked up by Robertsdale Police with items from the burglary in his vehicle.
In addition to the items stolen, it is also believed that approximately $8,000 to $10,000 worth of damage was done to computers and buildings on the property, Ingram said. All the stolen property has been recovered.
Deputies from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene of the burglary, Ingram said.
“All of the agencies in Baldwin County work very well together and are very good about sharing information,” Ingram said. “That’s why so many cases in Baldwin County get solved.”
When Jones is released from Robertsdale’s custody, he will be picked up by Summerdale Police officers and will face a charge of one count, third degree burglary, Ingram said. Once he is processed in Summerdale he will be transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Facility, where bond will be set. Other charges are pending, Ingram said.
