SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Authorities continue to search the driver of the vehicle responsible for a July 11 hit-and-run accident on the Causeway.
"It’s still under investigation. We’re still trying to put everything together," said Spanish Fort Police Chief David Edgar.
All that is known for certain, he said, is that an unidentified westbound vehicle struck a utility pole around 9:30 a.m. just east of the Mid-Bay crossing, but left the scene before authorities responded.
Vince Calametti, division engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation, said the crash damaged the pole that served as one of the primary communication connections for monitoring and managing traffic along the Causeway. The connections are used mainly for cameras and message boards along the route.
"Until repairs are made, ALDOT’s traffic management center in Mobile is without a communications link to the traffic monitoring cameras and message boards along the Causeway," Calametti said in a written statement.
Calametti said the department will work as quickly as possible to make the repairs – which could cost around $25,000 – needed to restore feeds to two traffic cameras and two message boards.
Edgar said Officer George Godwin is leading the Spanish Fort investigation, and anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 251-626-4915.
