Douglas Lee “Peanut” Stewart, 89, a native and resident of the Rabun Community of Bay Minette, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at his daughter’s residence.
He was a retired school bus mechanic for the Baldwin County Board of Education; he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II; and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Ann Stewart; his parents, Marion Benjamin and Julia McDowell Stewart; eight brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Annie Lucile Blackmon Stewart of Rabun; three children, Larry Douglas (Rhonda) Stewart of Duluth, Ga, Kathy Stewart Hollingsworth of Rabun and Kevin Lee (Brenda) Stewart of Bay Minette; seven grandchildren, Courtney Stewart and Madison Stewart, both of Bay Minette, Laura Stewart of Duluth, Ga, Stewart Hollingsworth and Kathryn Hollingsworth, both of Rabun, Tiffany Hollingsworth of Loxley and Brannon Hollingsworth of Hartselle; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 1 at Norris Funeral Home, and begins at noon Saturday, April 2 at the funeral home with funeral services at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Helen Stewart and the Rev. Alan Blackmon officiating. Burial with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army will follow at Dean Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Stewart Hollingsworth, Jack Harville, Randy Harville, Jeremy Blackmon, Burk Stewart and Ray Griffith. Honorary pallbearer is James Blackmon.
