Dorothy Lee Herides, or “Dot” as affectionately known by family and friends, of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on Oct. 30, 2021, after a 10-month battle with lung cancer, at the age of 79.

Dot was born on Oct. 1, 1942, in New York to Henry and Jane Carter. She married her sweetheart, Thomas Joseph Herides on Nov. 4, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois.

Dot was a member of the American Red Cross where she served at Ground Zero for two months following the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. She also served on location following various disasters throughout the US. On July 22, 2010, she received the Ralph G. Holberg, Jr. Award for her service with the American Red Cross.

In her spare time, Dot enjoyed swimming and playing Mahjong with her friends. She loved sewing and quilting, porcelain dolls and making grandfather and mantel clocks. She was also a huge cat lover, but more than that, she loved her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Margaret (Peggy) Earp.

Dot is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Thomas Joseph Herides; two children, Thomas (Ann) Herides and Ronald Herides; one brother, Dan Carter; along with other family members and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 370 S. Section Street in Fairhope, on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. Celebrant will be Fr. Gil Pierre. There will be a time of visitation before the service beginning at 10 a.m. in St. Lawrence Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org.
