DAPHNE — Jubilee City dogs now have a place at which to roam freely.
The Daphne Recreation Department is having a grand opening Saturday for a dog park at the Trione Park Sports Complex.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the complex located on Whispering Pines Road.
The Complex is located on Whispering Pines Road.
The park is about 300 feet by 150 feet, close to an acre, according to David McElroy, recreation director.
The park is divided in two areas: one for large dogs and one for small dogs, McElroy said.
Each park entrance is double-gated, McElroy said. After going through the first gate, owners and pets will enter an enclosed area, where the dog’s leash is taken off, and then a second gate opens into the park.
While large dogs are not allowed in the small-dog area, small dogs are allowed in the large dog area, McElroy said.
It is the owner’s decision.
Daphne has a leash law where any time a dog is out of its yard, it must be on a leash, according to McElroy.
“It’s a good opportunity for an owner to have the dog off the leash legally,” McElroy said of the park.
“Not many people have yards big enough for their dog to run around, or a fenced-in yard,” McElroy said.
Daphne’s dog park is the only one of its kind in South Alabama of which McElroy is aware.
