Evelyn C. Doege, 77, of Pensacola, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007.
She was born Oct 12, 1929 in Elberta to Herman Rummel and Frieda Eva Shuster. Pensacola has lost a colorful character and a friend to countless thousands of people she has met over her few short years here with us. She graduated from Foley High School in 1947.
She resided in Detroit in her early years after high school where she raised her children. When she had enough of the bright lights of the big city she relocated back down south to her beloved Pensacola. She initially worked at Mustin Beach Officers Club which soon lead to the opening of her own establishment called Evelyns Grunge Bar which became world famous.
Many great times were had in her establishment and it soon began to create friendships that have endured to this very day. She had the uncanny ability to make friends instantly and then they became eternally endeared to her and her ever-giving personality. What has surprised everyone is her actual passing as the indomitable spirit she always had in good times or bad was never suppressed.
The last four years she was a vital part of creating Boo for You Bamboo Garden, where she entertained many of her countless friends with her animals and life experiences. The garden has taken on her spirit attracting untold visitors to its tropical atmosphere. She was a people person and lived a full and colorful life; she would want everyone to know it was a wonderful life.
Survivors include four children, Danny Doege, Cherryl Lowry, Evie (Chris) Davis of Pensacola, Marlene Rice of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Melissa Doege, Dawn Slingsby, Cory Franklin, Lauren and Lily Davis, Christopher Doege, Rebekah Williamson, and Ryan Doege; great-grandchildren, Ansley, Liesel, and Lisbeth (her Vikings as she called them so lovingly); sisters Eleanor Lockwood and Eunice Cooper; and her pampered, spoiled dog Low-Fatte.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Perdido Bay Community Center, 13660 Innerarity Point Road, Pensacola.
Arrangements are by Trahan Family Funeral Home.
