DHS student chosen for national forum

Landon Sykora, a Daphne High School student, has been selected to attend the 2007 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, to be held over 10 days in July at Atlanta, Ga.

With cooperation from hospitals, research facilities and medical schools such as Emory University, the forum challenges students to learn about topics including educational requirements, career options, clinical practice and complex ethical and legal issues facing the medical profession.

Students will discuss global epidemics, cures for life-threatening diseases, life as a resident, medical specialties and primary care with current physicians and patients.

Each program culminates in a simulation that challenges students to consider a specific issue in public health and to present recommendations for achieving public awareness and concern for each issue.

Sykora has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of DHS’s chess team, Scholars Bowl team, the National Honor Society, band and percussion ensemble.

Sykora anticipates a pre-med major in college, according to a spokesperson.

He is the son of Glenn and Tampa Sykora of Daphne.
