Detect found in water supply in Summerdale

SUMMERDALE — Summerdale Public Works Director John Resmondo told the council on Monday that a “detect” was found in the town’s water supply.

Resmondo said ethylene dibromide was detected and the level from the Aug. 1 testing is 0.2 parts per billion, which he said is “not in the danger level.

“It’s nowhere near close to it,” he said. “You have options. You can filter your own water. … It’s nothing to be upset about. It’s not an emergency. We’re going to monitor it.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website, “Some people who drink water containing ethylene dibromide well in excess of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for many years could experience problems with liver, stomach, reproductive system, or kidneys, and may have an increased risk of cancer.”

The Alabama Department of Emergency Management informed the town and the EPA about the test result. Resmondo said if the amount of ethylene dipromide in the water supply increases, action may need to be taken, but for now it is in the monitoring stage.

“I expect it to go down,” he said. “If it changes, we’ll let the public know.”

The testing usually happens quarterly, but another sampling will be taken and results are expected in two or three weeks, Resmondo said.

“We’re doing followup samples to determine if we should take further action,” he said. “It’s very low levels, but it shows up so we should be concerned with it.”

Resmondo said letters would be sent to residents this week informing of the testing result.
