Davidson girls down Daphne in Regional

MOBILE, Alabama - The Lady Trojans road to Birmingham had to cross a bridge called Davidson Tuesday in the 6A girls South Regional at USA's Mitchell Center, but came up eight points short of the next toll to a Magic City ticket.

Daphne fell to the Lady Warriors 55-47. The Jubilee City girls had not lost a game since Jan. 3 (13-straight wins), but had not met a toll-taking team like the Lady Warriors since falling to Murphy before the streak.

Amber Yelding poured in a game-high 30 points but was the only Daphne player in double figures. Kirsten Henton added eight. Davidson's 6-foot-4 center Shuntavia Harris scored 22 from all over the court and was nearly 100 percent from beneath the basket. She had plenty of help from Jaylan Snowden who added 12 and Tammy Abney with 11.

Davidson benefited from of its team-height advantage by out rebounding the Trojans whose first-shot accuracy failed early. Daphne fell behind by 16 at the half but cut it to 10, 42-32, to start the fourth period.

The rally continued cutting the lead to five points with 3:03 to go. But Daphne had missed 7-of-12 fourth-quarter free throws by then and lost starting point-to-post senior Sierra Patterson to a touch-called fifth foul.

Harris got the Warriors back in the game with an outside shot as the clock ticked under a minute and Daphne was forced to foul. Yelding nailed her fourth and fifth treys of the night, but Davidson's 50 percent at the line down the stretch was good enough to hold on for the win. Daphne finished the season as 6A Area 3 champion with a 23-6

record.

Davidson faces Murphy Friday in the 6A region girls championship at 1:30 p.m. Murphy eliminated McGill-Toolen Catholic Tuesday 37-31.
