David Richard Learner, 86, a native and resident of Chicago, Ill. until retirement and a resident of Fairhope for 18 years, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013.

A WWII veteran, Dave joined the Navy at age 17, in 1944.

He attended the University of Illinois and the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating with a B.S. degree in biochemistry.

He retired from Montgomery Ward as an executive in the data processing division.

Dave loved flying airplanes, sailing his Rhodes 19 on Lake Michigan and traveling the world.

He was a member of the Baldwin Senior Travelers, volunteered at the Fairhope Public Library and the loggerhead turtle program in Gulf Shores.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, June; sister, Elaine (Hershel) Orenstein; niece, Elyse (Thomas) Bailey; nephew, Alan Orenstein; and brothers-in-law, Norman (Marylin) Betzer and Thomas Betzer.

Funeral services will be private.
