Darryl Jay Van Kirk, age 66, of Foley, Alabama, passed away at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas on Friday, May 27, 2016.
Darryl was born Feb. 23, 1950 at Fort Benning, Georgia, to Jay Kay Sr. and Jeanette J. (Clark) Van Kirk.
He grew up in the Barnes community and graduated from Linn High School in 1968. After high school he attended Beloit Vocational Technical School to train as a heavy equipment operator.
He married Kathy L. Hockersmith on May 24, 1971 at Oakley.
He joined the Army National Guard serving, until 1974.
In 1975 Darryl and Kathy started M&S Wholesale Electronics business in Hays, Kansas, and in 1979 they moved to Barnes and went into business with his parents and brother, Michael.
Darryl and Kathy branched off and started Precision Satellite Systems in Oakley, Kansas in 1983, moved their business to Clearwater, Florida. In 1998 they started their home-based business Living To Win Corp. in Sarasota, Florida until 2013.
Darryl and Kathy have been working together as property managers at Self Storage in Foley, Alabama. They also have an eBay sales business that they work on the side.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Foley, Alabama; his mother, Jeanette Oentrich of Barnes; four daughters, Karen (Mike) Combs of Sarasota, Florida, Jodi (Charles) McMahon of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Ranae Van Kirk of Foley, Alabama and Amy Van Kirk of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Michael (Cindy) Van Kirk of Bradenton, Florida; two sisters, Andrea Tilghman of Topeka and Laura (Delvin) Oentrich of Barnes; and by six grandchildren.
Darryl was preceded in death by his father, Jay Kay Van Kirk Sr.; and a brother, Jay Kay Van Kirk Jr.
Viewing will begin at noon on Tuesday, with Darryl’s family receiving guests between 6 and 8 p.m. at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville.
Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Barnes, with Russell Hall officiating. Connie Benson is the pianist, congregational hymns are planned.
Casket bearers are Charles McMahon, Brad Oentrich, Amos Cubit, Reiss Bruning, James Henningsen and Leonard Bremenkamp.
Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, west of Barnes.
