BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Daphne scored three times in the second quarter and outscored the Baldwin County Tigers 28-21 in the second half to leave Simmons Field in Bay Minette with a 49-21 6A Region 2 victory.
“Getting the region win is big,” said Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery. “We play in a tough region with little margin for error, so you bet we're happy to get out of here with a win. Baldwin County has a good team and
are well coached and made us make adjustments and fortunately, at times, we made the right ones and were able to stop them, get a turnover or score. Our defense did a good job. Proud of them. Baldwin County found
ways to move the ball, but our defense and our offense and our special teams all came up with big plays and we were able to take advantage of
some opportunities.”
BCHS coach Bobby Moore said big plays were the big difference. “I thought we moved the ball well all night, but we need to do a better job of finishing our drives.” he said, “We gave up some big plays and they turned
them into points. But defensively, and like the kick-off (DHS returned second-half kickoff for touchdown), we had some let downs and it cost us. But I really think we made some improvement over the last week, but we need to make more, get better and then be ready for Enterprise next week.”
Neither team could cross the goal line in the first 12 minutes, but after trading fumbles DHS struck first when
Jonathan McGaster scored the Trojans' first touchdown on a run from five yards out near the nine-minute mark of the second quarter. Ronnie Davis then scored on a 6-yard run and T. J. Fleeton had a 2-yard keeper for a score in the final three minutes of the half.
Davis then returned the second half kickoff all the way for an 81-yard touchdown and Tyler Cook's point-after-touchdowns were all good to increase Daphne's lead to 28-0 with 11:47 left in the third quarter.
The Tigers then finished their next drive which started at their 20-yard line and ended when quarterback Nate Jones connected with Jamychal Austin for a 26-yard touchdown pass at 9:34.
But the Trojans answered with two more scores just 12 seconds apart. First on a 15 yard-run by Wheylan Tolbert for a TD at 5:19 and an 18-yard scoop-and-score
fumble return for six by Kareem Brown on the ensuing kickoff at 5:07.
Jones then threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Jaquan Finch in the last minute of the third period to make it 42-14 heading into the final 12 minutes.
Daphne scored again on T.J. Reed's 6-yard run and Baldwin County then closed the scoring on a 9-yard run by Finch. Reed had a 29-yard run called back on a penalty.
Daphne's Tyler Cook was 6-for-6 on point-after kicks, teammate Dominick Brisolara added one and also caught a 23-yard pass from Zack Morgan. BCHS' Dylan Brinkley hit three extra points. Brinkley had a 30-yard field goal nullified by a penalty. He then narrowly missed from 35 yards out. Daphne's Jalan Coleman had an interception to stop a BCHS drive deep in Trojan territory. Miles Pierce recovered a fumble for DHS and Lorenzo Fields claimed one for the Tigers.
Both teams play at home Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. as Daphne (1-1, 1-0) welcomes Foley (2-0, 1-0) and the Tigers (0-2, 0-1) host Enterprise.
