DAPHNE, Alabama — The Trojans and Lions traded road wins and home losses in their 6A Area 3 series standing games, but Daphne pulled out a win in the tie-break game for a slight edge in the books.

Daphne took a 4-0 win at Foley Friday then a 2-1 loss to the visiting Lions early Saturday. Game three was also close with the Trojans holding off a late Lion rally in a 6-5 finish.

Brandon Peterson got the three-hit shutout road win for Daphne at Foley Friday to improve to 4-1 with a save. Ryan Lane had an RBI for the Trojans in a three-run seventh inning.

Michael Davis (5-1) took the 2-1 win for the Lions Saturday and held Daphne to three hits with 10 strikeouts. Davis’ only loss was a no-hitter. J.T. Peddrick and Maison Taylor each had an RBI single in the Foley win.

For the Trojans, Chase Crump singled and Steven Williams singled twice with an RBI for their sole run.

Daphne’s Will Cooper was the Game three winner with Ty Lowery picking up a save as the lead changed hands early. Foley went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans scored three in their half then made it 4-1 in the second inning. Foley challenged the lead with a two-run third before Daphne took a 6-4 lead into the seventh.

But the Lions managed just one more run on a SAC-Fly by Burke Langham to drive in Dylan Summerville from third. Summerville led the Lions with three hits— a single, a double and a triple. Peddrick and Taylor had RBI singles and Langham had single in the game in which the Lions out hit the Trojans 11-7. Daphne made it’s hits count with two RBIs each by Adam Daniels, Hunter Reese and Williams.

“Last night they got us at our place, today we got them here at theirs,” Foley coach Mike Reagan said. “Then in the last one, we got double digit hits and only scored five and it wasn’t enough. Just wasn’t the right moment to get the big hit. (In the game two Foley win) Michael Davis was very effective for us, kept us in the ball game. His slider was effective and we got that timely extra run. We scratched and clawed to get that one across and went ahead.”

Daphne coach Joe Hutchins said he knew it would be a tough series.

“We knew what we had to do and last night, Peterson threw a gem. Today, their pitcher battled and we didn’t have that clutch hit. Then made a couple of base-running mistakes. Put our heads down and against good teams in pressure situations, that’s not a way to win. Thankfully in the third game, we were patient. Took advantage of a couple of mistakes they made and we did a get a couple of clutch hits and got ahead and just able to hold them off. But the series was well pitched and the offenses struggled a little and when that happens you just have to stay heads up on the bases. I think we gave opportunities away and we need to work on it.

“You know it’s hard enough to get guys on with this new bat, we can’t (afford) to erase them with mental mistakes.”

Daphne improved to 9-9 overall, 1-1 in area play while Foley improved to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in area play.

Also over the weekend in 6A Area 3, Fairhope swept Robertsdale to make the Pirates 2-0 in the area, 18-3 overall. The Bears fell to 0-2 in area play and 9-10 overall.
