DAPHNE, Alabama — The Tigers and Trojans split their Saturday doubleheader, but Daphne took 2-of-3 from Baldwin County over the two-day, three-game series between the non-area county rivals in what amounted to a warm-up series for the real deal later this week.
The Tigers won game three 3-1 after dropping game two 6-0 at Trojan Field Saturday. Daphne came from behind to win the first game at BCHS 3-2 Friday.
Tucker Miller (3-1) got the game three win for the Tigers who improved to 12-5 overall. Miller held the Trojans to four hits, one walk and no runs and struck out seven through six innings with Jake Swearingen getting the save on one hit and one run to close the seventh. Jordan Ebert had two doubles and two RBIs, Kyle Buck singled in Swearingen who had doubled. DHS got on the board late after leaving runners in scoring position.
James Reyner went seven and got the win for Daphne in game two on a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks. Dalton Filotei was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Adam Daniels and Ty Lowery each singled in a run and Brandon Peterson drove in two.
Friday, the Trojans trailed 2-0 until the seventh inning when they surged ahead 3-2 and held on for the win. Daphne capitalized on some late BCHS mistakes after Steve Williams reached on a single, then scored on an error followed by Filotei and Reyner who scored on errant throws.
“We played pretty well at times and got really good pitching,” said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins on what keyed the two wins. “But, like the first and the third games, we got behind in both. Last night we were able to come back. But today we just couldn’t pull it off and you just can’t wait until the last inning to put a rally together. A base running mistake here, an error there — they make a couple of big plays and it's just hard to come back every time. They need to understand that hey have to pick up runs win they can.”
One of the big plays in the DHS rally was a diving, potentially tie-run saving catch by Ebert in left field.
“That was a great catch by Jordan,” said BCHS coach Peter Bezeredi, who was happy to see his team pull out a win, but was concerned about his team’s performance in game two. “I’m proud on the one hand for the way we fought in this last one today. But we can’t let something like losing a game like we did last night to get to us. We should have come out and played as aggressively as ever, but we kind of held back. We made some mistakes last night, but you have to put that behind you and play our game. I’m glad we got back on track and refused to lose the last one. Overall, this was good practice for the series ahead. McGill’s always tough and we’re going to use the next few days to get ready. It's big one.”
BCHS travels to McGill-Toolen at Lipscomb Field Friday (6:30 p.m.) to start its 6A Area 4 series then finishes the series at BCHS Saturday while Daphne opens it’s 6A Area 3 series at Foley Friday (6 p.m.), then host the Lions for a double header Saturday. Saturday games at BCHS and DHS are set for noon and 2:30 p.m. starts.
