DAPHNE, Alabama — The Daphne Trojans split a Saturday doubleheader at their place dropping a 4-1 loss to Alma Bryant in the morning and picking up a 14-10 win over McGill-Toolen Catholic in the nightcap.
In between, the Bryant Hurricanes edged the McT Yellow Jackets 2-1 in 10 innings.
Temperatures dropped into the low 50’s by the end of the Daphne-McGill slugfest as the hits and runs total climbed to 56.
“It was not the best night for pitchers to stay warm and throw a lot,” said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins who was proud of his team for coming back from a seven-run and then a three-run deficit as well as a loss earlier in the day.
In game three, the Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Daphne responded by plating 4 in the first and three in the second to level the score. McGill pushed three more across in the fifth for a 10-7 lead, but the Trojans came back with four in the bottom half to take their first lead 11-10.
Will Cooper (1-0) got the win for Daphne and Brandon Peterson took the save as the Jackets offense went cold late and the Trojans added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“I’m proud of the boys for coming back, battling back,” Hutchins said. “In the first game we came out a little flat and just didn’t compete offensively. We played pretty well defensively, just didn’t swing well. In the second game, like I said, really proud because they put that loss behind and did not quit. We were down seven in the first, but came back and got four, then three and tied it up. Then it leveled off for a while. Then they scored three and you know we could have given up, but didn’t. We came right back and took the lead and then held it. Maybe the pitching wasn’t the best we’ve seen, but it wasn’t anything that much different. But something I really like to see is for our guys to go up to the plate aggressive and we did that. And that was the difference. Will and Pete (Peterson) came through, challenged their hitters and shut them down. We are still a work in progress but overall we did some good today.”
Both teams had 14 hits through the fifth inning with the Trojans ahead 11-10. Daphne added three more runs off more four hits for the final.
Stephen Williams, Horace Johnson and Hunter Reese had two doubles each and James Reyner had one.
Chase Crump, Tolly Filotei, Johnson, Reese and Reyner each had a single, Ty Lowery had two singles and Peterson was 4-for-4.
The Trojans will host Baker Tuesday at 6 p.m., and Auburn Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at DHS.
