Daphne Trojans may soon have a new address; planning commission will vote July 28 on whether to change street name

DAPHNE, Ala.— On July 20, the Planning Commission discussed renaming Lawson Road in front of Daphne High School to Champions Way to commemorate the recent achievements of the school’s athletic teams.

“This was kind of a thought and idea of a lot of people who came up with this name of this street. Since the Trojans won the 6A championship, several have approached me about changing the name of this street to this point. I really have no problem with it and I really like the name,” Mayor Fred Small said.

Small said the designation will only affect the school’s mailing address, which will be 1 Champions Way, if the renaming is voted into effect.

Commissioner Larry Chason jokingly provided an alternate name.

“We don’t want to go with ‘Almost Bowling Alley Drive?” Chason asked, referring to a developer’s failed plan last year to place a bowling alley in the vicinity — a contentious issue at the time, due to conflicting zoning and some residents’ criticisms.

The commission discussed designating the roadway “Champion’s Way,” but punctuation is not allowed on road signs.

The commission is expected to vote on the road designation on Thursday, July 28 at 5 p.m.
