Daphne Trojans finish 2-2 in Gulf Coast Classic

DAPHNE, Alabama — At Daphne High School, the host-team Trojans finished 2-2 in the Gulf Coast Classic pool-play draw. Not quite good enough to move on to the final-four round Thursday in the 24-team event.

Daphne ended the trial run with a 10-5 win over Central-Phenix City in the final preliminary game at the DHS site.

The Trojans opened the tournament Monday with an 8-0 shutout over South Side (Tenn.), but dropped a pair of one-run losses to Enterprise 12-11 on Tuesday and fell 6-5 to Bob Jones High earlier Wednesday. Jones’ Patriots advanced to the semifinals with that win.

Chase Crump (2-2) got the win for DHS with Stephen Williams picking up the save(his third). Crump scattered eight hits, struck out three with no walks over six innings. At the plate, Crump had a triple and two RBIs for Daphne while Tevin Rencher drove in three fellow Trojans. Tanner Lee also had two hits for the Trojans (10-13). The Devils out hit the Trojans 10-8.

Jamal Howard led Central-Phenix City with three RBIs and a hit for, Jermond Williams went 2-for-4 and Dakota Pittman had a hit for the Devils who battled back from a 7-0 deficit.

Earlier Wednesday, Bob Jones' Matt Bowen held off a late Trojan rally to go the distance for his third win (3-1) and help get the Pats (17-7) into the semifinal.

Bowen struck out seven in the , eight hitters, but DHS earned five runs.

Chris Flowers and Trey Ward each had an RBI for the Pats. Rencher was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and scored twice while Lee also had two RBIs.

DHS scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning chasing a 6-2 Patriot lead but came up a run short for the second time in the tourney.

The Trojans fell to Enterprise 12-11 on Tuesday. On Monday,

Daphne topped out South Side of of Memphis, Tenn. 8-0 as

James Reyner tossed the four hit shutout through five scoreless innings for the Trojans with no walks. He struck out five.

At the plate Williams was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Adam Daniel was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Reyner also had a hit.

The Trojans will host rival Fairhope on April 4.
