DAPHNE — A field goal and an extra point were the difference Friday at Daphne's Jubilee Stadium in an annual contest that garners national attention from ESPN in 2007 to the United States Marine Corps 2010 Rivalry Series on the eve of 9-11.
Heralded rivalry aside, The Trojans' 17-13 win over Foley puts Daphne at 2-0 and the Lions at 1-1 in 6A Region 2.
"That's what makes it big," said DHS coach Glenn Vickery. "Anytime you win a region game, it's big. When you beat Foley, coach (Todd) Watson and those guys, you beat a good team."
Watson said his team did a good job early, but needed to make more plays in the second half.
"We started off strong. Had some injuries and that's part of the game. But we still need to make plays at the end," he said. "You know, we battled a great football team tonight. Every game with them in the last six years has been decided in the last few minutes. I'm proud of our players. They worked hard and they never quit. They're resilient and played their hearts out. I couldn't ask any more of our kids. I'm just so proud of each and every one of them."
After two scoreless possessions each, the Lions got off to a roaring start with quarterback Darius Powell bursting through the Daphne defense on a fourth-and-one for a 33-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left in the first period. But the point-after kick was wide.
Daphne's Jonathan McGaster returned the kickoff 70 yards, but the play was called back to the DHS 25 for clipping. After two first downs, Brandon Roberts kicked a 33-yard field goal to make it 6-3. Foley then made it 13 - 3 on another Powell keeper from the three that capped an impressive 84-yard drive. The Trojans got their first touchdown on the next drive going 65 yards in six plays with T.J. Yeldon's 44-yard run to the Lions' 12 which helped set up his own 12-yard TD to make it 13-10 at the half.
Both sides traded punts well into the third period with DHS gaining ground with overall field position. Twice Roberts' punts pinned the Lions inside their own 10.
Then with 2:40 to go in the third, Foley was forced to punt from the back of their endzone and Daphne's Torren McGaster returned it to the Foley 35.
Five plays later DHS took the lead with DHS QB Russ Mosley pushing it over from the one. The TD was set up by a 31-yard Mosley-to-Jonathan McGaster pass.
Vickery said his defense helped secure the victory.
"Our defense did a great job and the coaches did a great job getting them ready to play. I’m proud of all our kids. They came out and beat a good Foley team."
One of those Daphne defenders, line backer Roderick Tate, was named the Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player and was presented the MVP trophy by the U.S. Marine Corps after the game.
In a rivalry in which the average point differential has been less than a field goal the last seven years, The Trojans' four-point margin raised the average from 2.16 to 2.43.
Yeldon had 95 yards and a touchdown on his 17 carries and Tyrell Holloway added 87 yards on just 14 carries for the Trojans. Mosley was 7-17 for 98 yards passing and netted just two yards rushing – one was for the go ahead TD and the other for a late first down to run out the clock at the end of the game. Torren McGaster had one interception to stop a third-quarter Lion drive. Powell rushed for 140 yards on 25 carries, scoring twice and threw for 59 yards going 10-17-1.
Daphne (3-0, 2-0) plays Williamson Friday at 7 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium while Foley (2-1, 1-1) hosts McGill-Toolen.
