Dolphin running back becomes program’s first selection; Trojan and Toro defenders will mark teams’ first honorees since 2021

A trio of Baldwin County standouts were selected to represent their state at the 38th-annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic set for Dec. 14 at Mobile’s Hancock Whitney Stadium.

Running back Kolin Wilson from Gulf Shores, linebacker Bishop Burkhalter from Spanish Fort and defensive lineman Talib Graham from Daphne were all named to the 41-player roster revealed Wednesday afternoon by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Wilson marked the first Dolphin to receive a roster spot for the interstate all-star contest in program history.

Burkhalter and Graham will both be their teams’ first representatives since 2021, following Cooper Wilson and Jacob Galmiche, respectively. According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, Burkhalter is the 16th Toro chosen and Graham is the 20th Trojan selected.

The Alabama All-Stars, head coached by Saraland’s Jeff Kelly, will be looking for their fifth-straight victory in the all-time series that they lead 26-11.

Stat check-in

All three local representatives have helped their teams fight for playoff positioning in their respective regions with some stellar stats so far.

Wilson, a Mississippi State commit, is the 11th-ranked rusher in Alabama according to MaxPreps stats with 1,334 rushing yards on 177 attempts over eight games for an average of 7.54 yards per carry and 166.5 yards per game. He’s registered 13 total touchdowns as part of 1,785 all-purpose yards.

Burkhalter has been one of the top tacklers in the state and recently surpassed the century mark with 101 total tackles between 43 solos and 58 assists over eight games to rank No. 29 in MaxPreps’ standings. He’s also recorded 7 tackles for loss and 1 sack on top of 3 pass breakups and 2 fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

The Toro linebacker was also credited with an AHSAA record for the shortest punt return for a touchdown, a 1-yard score against Murphy in Week 5 that ultimately went viral.

Graham, an Ole Miss commit, has been featured in the sack rankings since the beginning of the season and is currently tied for 31st in Alabama with 7 sacks in addition to 3 quarterback hurries. The edge rusher has racked up 61 total tackles to go along with 24 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles and a blocked field goal. Graham also earned a 16-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against McGill-Toolen in Week 1.

Star-studded roster

Team Alabama will look to extend its winning streak behind a star-studded lineup that includes double-digit SEC commits.

A host of others will join Wilson and Graham in suiting up for Southeastern Conference teams next year, including Elba’s Alvin Henderson (Auburn), Carver-Montgomery’s Anthony Rogers (Alabama) and Tristan Norman (Texas A&M), Saraland’s KJ Lacey (Texas), Southside-Selma’s Derick Smith (Alabama), Parker’s Jourdin Crawford (Auburn), Highland Home’s Jakaleb Faulk (Auburn), Thompson’s Anquon Fegans (Auburn) and T.R. Miller’s Myles Johnson (Florida).

Other Alabama All-Star players set to ascend to the college ranks include Oxford’s Mason Mims (Louisville), Enterprise’s Zion Grady (Ohio State), Parker’s Na’eem Offord (Ohio State) and Timothy Merritt (Miami), Auburn’s Peyton Plott (Georgia Southern) and Central-Phenix City’s Daylyn Upshaw (Miami).

Money quote

“We thank the committee, as always, for their time and dedication in picking this outstanding group of student-athletes,” said AHSADCA Director James Lawrence. “We look forward to watching these student-athletes compete against Mississippi in December. Along with Coach Kelly and his staff, we know these all-stars will represent the AHSAA, our state and their respective schools and communities well. We thank our member schools and our coaches for their continued support of this annual matchup. Picking this team is always a difficult job.”
