Daphne sweeps Robertsdale for regular season crown

Sara Sigrest pitched a 15-strikeout, three-hit shuout in the first game and a one-hit, three-strikeout seventh in the second game to carry Daphne to a 2-0, 6-4 sweep of Robertsdale.

The win gave the Lady Trojans the regular-season 6A Area 3 fastpitch softball championship.

Sigrest no-hit the Lady Golden Bears until the fifth inning in the first game, then pitched out of a one-out, second-and-third situation in the fifth inning to make a pair of first-inning runs stand up. In the second game, the junior hurler gave up a leadoff single to Casey Byrnes after taking over for starter Hannah Campbell, then threw third strikes past the next three batters to end the game.

“We got back into it, but it’s the old adage, ‘too little, too late,’” Robertsdale coach Steve Shartzer said of the second-game rally. “Daphne’s a quality ball club and (when) you spot ‘em six runs it’s a hard road to hoe coming back from that.”

“Hannah threw a great game. She held ‘em down for six innings and Sara was able to come in and close the door,” DHS coach L.T. Yelding said. “I think (Campbell) was a little tired. She threw last night.

“The good thing about (the second game) is we had a little run support. We came out and hit the ball in key situations when we needed to get some runs.”

Shortstop Hannah Henry’s two-run single, the third straight hit off Robertsdale pitcher Jessie Weaver after Weaver walked Haley Sirmon with one out, provided Sigrest with all the runs she would need in the first game. Weaver allowed only two more hits the rest of the game, struck out one batter and walked two.

Amber Henson had two of Daphne’s five hits. Kate Swinson had two hits for Robertsdale, including a fifth-inning double after Megan Durant singled. Sigrest struck out Adrian Dunbar and Anna Callaway to keep RHS scoreless.

Robertsdale battled back froma 6-0 deficit in the second game, scoring all its runs in the sixth against tiring freshman left-hander Campbell.

Back-to-back three-run rallies in the third and fourth gave Daphne its 6-0 lead.

The first-game shutout gave Sigrest a 27-8 record. Campbell upped her record to 16-5. Weaver’s record fell to 10-11, Shartzer’s to 15-3.
