DAPHNE, Alabama -- The Lady Trojans improved to 2-1 in the 6A Area 3 standings with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 volleyball win over visiting Fairhope Thursday. The Lady Pirates, who were without injured senior Rachel Cooper, fell to 1-2 in the Area 3 race which Robertsdale leads 3-0 midway into the season.
Daphne's Katherine Barr led her team with eight kills and 16 digs, Audrey Walding had 18 assists, Jordan Filotei had 18 digs, Suzanne Evans had seven kills with six digs and Taylor Wright had six kills.
The Pirates were led by Brittany Domino with nine kills and six digs, Imani Kirksey with eight kills, Rickie Lee Constant with six kills and two blocks, Morghan Ray's 14 assists, Catherine Knight's eight digs while Katelyn Hayes and Carrington Rockwell each added had two kills to the Fairhope attack.
The first game was tied six times including 18-18 before Filotei served out seven-straight Daphne points with Wright spiking the game winner.
In game two DHS kept a one-to-two point advantage until building a 21-12 lead behind the serve of Tristan Campbell. But Fairhope battled back to within three starting with a kill by Domino for a 23-20 DHS lead. An FHS error, however, gave the Trojans game point and Evans hit a winner for the game.
Game three was a cliffhanger as the Pirates kept a steady one or two point lead until extending it to 19-15 off a pair of kills and blocks each by Hayes and Rockwell before Daphne pulled back to trail by one 19-18. DHS then tied it at 20-all. The Trojans went on to reach match point 24-21, but Knight served the Pirates back to a one point 24-23 game. A net violation by Daphne gave FHS a chance to tie it 24-24, but a cross-court volley by Barr sealed the Trojan win.
Both teams could meet again in the Battle at Spanish Fort 16-team tournament to be held at either the SF high school or middle school gyms Friday afternoon and Saturday.
