Daphne students deliver jokes and serious message with "Urinetown"

DAPHNE — Yes, Daphne High School's spring musical is about pee.

The show "Urinetown the Musical," portrays a futuristic world in 2028 in which a paralyzing water shortage spans the globe due to mankind's overuse of resources and unchecked pollution.

As in any global disaster, there is someone to take advantage of it. The use of private toilets has been outlawed to regulate water usage, leaving the public to use pay toilets owned and operated by a corrupt monopoly.

The often laugh-out-loud satire has plenty of South Park-esque potty humor and the catchy songs were nominated for a Tony Award in 2002 for Best Original Musical Score.

The students at Daphne High School's theater department are hoping curiosity will bring in the crowds, and that they leave with a new perspective.

"It's the shock value," said Jess Jackson, Daphne High's theater teacher. "They are going to come see it because they are intrigued or confused. Either way, they're going to fill seats and they're going to learn something."

Jackson said initially some students were embarrassed to talk about urine on stage.

"Once they got into it, they realized this is the most fun show ever. It's hilarious, they just had to trust the process," Jackson said.

The show is heavy on lessons. The satire addresses the pitfalls of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and even musical theater itself.

Hilarious, absolutely. But in the end "Urinetown" delivers a very unfunny, if not downright alarming message.

"The Earth is our friend, and we have to treat it well or else," Jackson said.

The show runs April 19-22 at Daphne High School's Trojan Theatre. Tickets are available on gofan.co.

The show is directed by Jackson with choreography by Jenna Reiter, musical direction by Brandon Marcus, of The Studio in Daphne, and Tralise Pounds serves as stage manager with Gracie Robinson as assistant stage manager.
