Daphne Public Library to feature magician on June 27

DAPHNE — The Daphne Public Library’s summer reading program is almost over, but children of all ages still have more opportunities to head to the library for some otherworldly fun. On Monday, children can come see magic tricks and surprises.

Russell Davis will be at the library to perform magic tricks and entertain children beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Daphne Recreation Center. Davis is a professional comedy magician who weaves humor into his magic tricks to captivate his audiences, library staffers said.

“His show is called ‘The Magic of Reading.’ He has been here before. He is a comedian and a magician. He is very good with the kids,” Fanny Barnett, children’s librarian said.

The show is expected to be 45 minutes long.

Davis also will present a magic workshop, but the number of children who can attend is limited and registration has already filled up.

The summer reading program began with a kickoff on June 6 at the library, and so far this month has been filled with story times, reading and events like The Zinghoppers’ performance last week.

Children are invited to stay after the magic performance for a raffle of roller-skating tickets, Kangaroos tickets and other prizes provided by the Friends of the Daphne Public Library.

The theme of this year’s program is “One World, Many Stories,” for young children and “You are Here” for middle- and high-school-aged students.

During the summer reading program, children of all ages have been keeping up with the books they read in June on their reading logs, which they will turn in on June 30. The children have been encouraged to write down the number of pages they have read, and library staffers said it didn’t matter if they were reading a chapter-book, a magazine or a newspaper — as long as they were reading. The top readers in each age group will receive awards and prizes at the awards ceremony on July 4 at 4:30 p.m.

The festivities will continue with movies later in the week, Barnett said. On Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. the library will show “Tangled,” and on Thursday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. the library will show “How to Train Your Dragon.”
