DAPHNE, Ala.—In recent weeks, the Daphne Police Department has received an increased number of complaints about residents’ cars being broken into. Four suspects were caught weeks ago, and Lt. Jud Beedy with the police department said the calls decreased after those suspects were caught.
Police arrested two more individuals June 6 for six counts — three counts each — of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle. The alleged burglaries took place in Lake Forest; police were notified by a Lake Forest resident who happened to be awake at 3 a.m. and witnessed the crime, according to police.
It’s not the first time in recent memory that a watchful neighbor aided justice. A previous car burglary last month was reported to police by a different Lake Forest resident, Beedy said.
The Lake Forest resident saw the two suspects, 18-year-old Andrew Lee Byrd of Loxley and 18-year-old Melissa Cahoon of Daphne, walking around the neighborhood. When police arrived, the suspects were standing near a vehicle parked in the middle of the street. Police questioned the suspects and discovered stolen property near the car and arrested Byrd and Cahoon.
While investigating the crime, police found that the suspects had stolen property from three cars in the area, police stated, adding that stolen items recovered have been returned to owners.
Beedy said the items stolen included money, electronics, jewelry, flashlights and cigarette lighters.
“It is what they always take, whatever someone can put in their pockets and run away with,” Beedy said.
Beedy said investigators believe all the vehicles that were burglarized were left unlocked — a recurring problem in the Jubilee City that has contributed to the ease of thefts from vehicles.
