DAPHNE, Ala. — Daphne City Council members voted Monday night against cost-of-living raises and health insurance for the next panel, which will be seated in November. After a contentious debate among some members of the current council, the body voted 6 to 1 against the proposal. Only District 7 Councilman August “Gus” Palumbo favored the measure.
No motion was made toward separate votes on the proposed cost-of-living adjustment and providing health insurance coverage for the council, and the timing prevents further discussion on the matter. Under state law, a municipal body cannot vote on changing its own compensation package, but is allowed to grant raises to new or returning members no later than six months before the next election.
The City Council did vote, however, to remove the mayor’s car allowance. Instead of receiving $6,000 each year to cover wear and tear on the chief executive’s personal vehicle, the next mayor will have use of a city vehicle while traveling on official business, or can be compensated for mileage if using their own car or truck.
Mayor Bailey Yelding Jr., who was appointed to complete the remainder of former Mayor Fred Small’s term, has indicated he will not seek election to the post, and will retire. The next mayor will continue to make an annual salary of $75,000.
The next City Council meeting will take place March 6, at 6:30 p.m., in the Council Chamber at Daphne City Hall.
