Daphne looks to expand alcohol

DAPHNE — The city is taking a closer look at its alcohol ordinance and revising its regulations to allow more sites to be included.

The new ordinance will allow drinking at special events held in a public place. Special events must apply for a permit in order for alcohol to be consumed in public. The purpose for the new ordinance is to allow the consumption of alcohol in places other than the Civic Center and Bayfront Pavilion.

There will be a one drink on street limit, meaning that a person can only consume or be in possession of one drink on the street at a time. Alcoholic beverages must be 16 ounces or less and cannot be contained in a bottle or glass container.

The ordinance will be voted on at the next council meeting on Nov. 5, which will be the first session for new members Pat Rudicell, Randy Fry, Robin LeJeune and Dane Haygood.

Other business this week included a first reading of an ordinance to regulate city employees’ use of social media. The ordinance was not discussed during the meeting and will also be voted on at the next council meeting. The proposed ordinance will not allow city employees to engage in social media activity while on duty. Supervisors will not be able to access an employee’s social media page.

The ordinance reads, “Any employee may reject, without fear of retaliation, any request from any other employee, or manager, or supervisor that, if accepted, would permit access to a restricted social media page (such as a “friend” or “like” or connection request).”

The city will be able to view and monitor and employee’s publicly accessible website, blog or other social media forum at any time. Employees will be held responsible for engaging in any activity that violates the ordinance.

There will be a work session on Monday, Oct. 22 to introduce the new council members to the policies and procedures associated with being on the council. It is an open meeting and the public is welcome to attend.
