Rehearsals are underway for Daphne High School’s production of “Mamma Mia!” and with opening night set for March 26, students in the cast and crew said they are excited to put on this show.
“Mamma Mia!” transports the audience to a Grecian Isle where the fun, funky group of characters all come together at Donna’s taverna. Characters fall in and out of love to a soundtrack purely made up of ABBA songs that are “going to really get stuck in your head,” according to Becc Sulkosky, who’s playing a drunk beach bum in the show.
Night and matinee shows will be open to the public March 26-28 at 7 p.m. and March 28-29 at 2 p.m. An understudy closing show will be held March 29 at 7 p.m. and special shows for Daphne High School students will be offered on March 26 and 27.
Tickets can be purchased by scanning the QR code on the show’s poster or by visiting https://gofan.co/app/school/AL19819?activity=Performing%20Arts.
Students said audience members should come prepared to have fun and pay extra attention to some of the actors and actresses.
“I think the audience should know that probably over half of our cast and crew consists of seniors and this is probably going to be most of their last shows ever,” Brielynn Green, who’s playing Tanya, said.
Many of these seniors have been in theater productions or classes for the four years that Jessica Jackson has taught at Daphne High School.
“It has been an adventure and it’s bittersweet,” Jackson said on rehearsing for “Mamma Mia!”. “It’s a good show and I’m losing a lot of really good people that I’ve had from the time I came here.”
She has 10 years of experience in Baldwin County Public Schools, working six years as Spanish Fort High School’s theater teacher before coming to Daphne.
Many of the seniors in the show have been on stage together before and agreed with Jackson that the show is bittersweet.
Senior Lily Melton, who’s playing Donna, said the ending is a part that stands out to her the most because “saying goodbye is always emotional because it’s like the end but it’s also the actual end because this is our last show.
Green said one of her favorite moments is when the mother daughter duo characters of the show share a moment to the song “Slipping Through My Fingers.”
“It’s really emotional for us because one of our Sofie’s is a senior and one of our Donna’s is a senior so no matter what cast you see it’s going to be really, really sad and emotional,” she said.
Student assistant director, Landon Woody, said that after working with the theater programs at school for a few years, “it’s been such a privilege to work alongside them and now get to tell them what to do.”
“Honestly, this show, I think it’s the perfect way to end my time here,” he said.
Connie Grizzofi, playing Eddie, gave a shout out to the makeup and tech crews, also made up of students. The set was built by Jackson’s husband, Ronnie, and students in her technical theater class.
