DAPHNE – The Trojans welcome arch-rival Foley to Daphne tonight. Both 6A teams are undefeated so far this year: 2-0 overall and 1-0 with region wins last week. Daphne defeated Baldwin County and Foley topped Robertsdale to open 6A Region 2 play.
DHS coach Glenn Vickery said his team must be prepared to face several Division I prospects on both sides of the ball for the Lions.
"In most big games you have to survive the first quarter," he said. "Foley can hurt you in many ways and you have to match their speed and quickness. Darius Powell (Quarterback) is a winner. He runs their offense to perfection. He's a coach on the field. Foley's offensive line averages about 310. They are big men."
The Foley defense will be just as challenging, Vickery said, adding that his offensive line led by Hunter Broadus, Ben Lewis, Ashton McQuitery and Jeremy Sparks had a good night against Baldwin County and will need to be on again for Foley. "(The Lions) have switched to a three-man front. They are extremely quick and fly to the ball. Coach Derick Scott is the DC and he has them playing hard and fast. Dre'shon McGaster may be the best D-lineman in the area."
Even though this game is set to be televised, Vickery expects an overflow crowd.
"There should be a huge crowd for this one," he said. "Both teams are playing well at this point. We have tons of respect for (Head) coach (Todd) Watson and the class program they run. We have had some barn burners and some classic games with Foley. Both teams will be up for this one."
Toros host St. Paul’s in Region 1
Spanish Fort welcomes Saint Paul's Episcopal to the Hill tonight. The Saints march in with a 2-0 record and remembrances of an upset victory over the Toros last year.
The Toros are also undefeated overall and in region play and ranked No. 3 in 5A and intent on preventing a repeat of 2009.
"St Paul's has the No. 1 offense averaging 50 points per game and the No. 1 defense giving up 3.5 points per game in 5A," said SFHS head coach Bryant Vincent. "They are extremely good in the kicking game. We will have our hands full Friday night. They are solid at every position, they beat us last year and have their entire team back. It is going to be a challenge for our team, but one we won't back down from. Our boys will be ready to play come Friday."
Admirals visit Montgomery Academy
The Admirals hit the high seas to Montgomery Academy tonight for their second 3A Region 1 contest. The Eagles are 0-2, 0-1 while Bayside takes a 2-0, 1-0 record to the capitol.
Bayside head coach Phil Lazenby said his team must not relax after their big win in over T.R. Miller last week.
"We have to travel a long way to play this game," he said. "I know Montgomery Academy will be gunning for us. We must keep our focus on the task at hand. Their strength is their offensive line. They are big and strong and athletic. Their defense will make us throw the ball."
Bayside's region win over T.R. Miller helped boost the Admirals to a No. 10 ranking.
Pirates hope to chomp Gators
The Pirates will host the Satsuma Gators tonight in a 6A Region 2 match up. Fairhope won its region opener over McGill-Toolen Catholic while Satsuma dropped its first region game to Williamson.
Fairhope head coach David Faulkner said his team must reduce unforced errors and contain the Gators' offensive threats and dominate the kicking phase.
"Their strengths are they have a very talented running back who can score from anywhere on the field," he said. "And a very physical offensive line so their run game is going to be difficult to stop. Defensively they are very fast and physical while giving up only 12 points this year. To counter we must tackle well on defense and swarm to the ball offensively.
"We must eliminate the penalties and unforced mistakes that have killed us in the first two games. And win the kicking game."
Bears host newcomer Williamson
Robertsdale’s Golden Bears (1-1, 0-1) host 6A Region 2 newcomer Williamson tonight at J.D. Sellars Stadium.
The Bears are coming off a region loss to rival Foley and opened the season with a 56-21 win over Gulf Shores, while Williamson (1-1, 1-0) defeated region foe Satsuma 12-6 last week and fell to 5A powerhouse Vigor in week one.
Tigers visit The Lip to face Yellow Jackets
The 0-2 Baldwin County Tigers are looking for a win and a touchdown tonight at the Lipscomb Complex in Mobile against McGill-Toolen.
The Tigers, who are coming off a 42-0 loss to Daphne, have not scored in 2010 after starting the season with a 28-0 loss to Theodore.
McGill-Toolen lost to Fairhope last week.
Both teams are looking for their first 6A Region 2 wins.
