Daphne defense dominates, Trojans bounce back with 21-7 win over Carver Mo.

DAPHNE — One week after a narrow rivalry loss, Daphne entered Friday night looking for a response.

Carver-Montgomery arrived with momentum of its own after a dominant Week 1 victory, but the Trojans absorbed an early punch, settled into the game and scored 21 unanswered points to earn a 21-7 win at Jubilee Stadium.

The opening possessions featured both teams trying to establish themselves.

Daphne received the opening kickoff but struggled to find an early rhythm against an aggressive Carver defensive front. Carver came out attacking on its first possession, but Daphne’s defense remained steady and answered with a stop of its own.

After another Daphne punt, the Wolverines found their first sustained offensive success.

Carver opened things up with a strong running game complemented by quick passes, moving the ball downfield before finishing the drive with a rushing touchdown at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter.

Daphne responded by becoming more balanced offensively. The Trojans moved into scoring range on their next possession but came away empty after a missed field goal with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter.

Instead of changing course, Daphne stayed poised.

After its defense forced another punt, quarterback Christian Segar connected with running back Tay Young for a touchdown to even the score at seven.

Head coach Kenny King said the response was a reflection of the work his team put in after falling 18-15 to Spanish Fort the previous week.

“They came back to work, stayed positive and believed in what we gave them every day,” King said. “Keep pushing, good things are going to happen.”

Carver’s defensive front continued to apply pressure, but Segar increasingly found ways to make plays outside the structure of the offense.

On Daphne’s next scoring possession, the quarterback repeatedly escaped pressure and extended plays long enough for receivers to uncover as Carver’s coverage broke down. He eventually finished the drive himself, scrambling for a touchdown with 4:41 left in the second quarter to give Daphne its first lead, 14-7.

“The quarterback play, Segar, was unbelievable,” King said. “He was scrambling in the pocket. He made some great plays.”

Segar also pointed to his ability to create under pressure as one of the strongest parts of his performance.

“I think I evaded pressure well tonight,” Segar said. “A lot of times I was having to scramble out and throw it on the run. I think I did a pretty good job of that.”

While Daphne became more comfortable, Carver increasingly struggled to stay on schedule.

Penalties repeatedly backed the Wolverines up and stalled possessions, including one drive that eventually reached fourth-and-27 before they were forced to punt.

Carver head coach Mario White said the volume of mistakes was unusual for his team.

“That is the worst it’s been since I’ve been here,” White said. “We’ve never been penalized that much. I’m not going to make any excuses about it.”

White also credited Daphne for capitalizing when opportunities presented themselves.

“We had an opportunity to make plays and we didn’t, and they did,” White said. “So I’m not going to take any credit away from Daphne.”

Daphne took its 14-7 lead into halftime after running out the remaining first-half clock.

Carver opened the third quarter with the football but punted at 9:44. The Wolverines remained within one score for the duration of the period, but the physical toll of the night became more apparent late in the quarter as several Carver defenders began dealing with cramps.

White said the number of heat-related issues was unexpected.

“Last week we had no heat-related injuries, so this was kind of shocking today to me,” White said.

Daphne finally created separation early in the fourth quarter.

After another Carver possession was hampered by penalties, the Trojans took advantage. Young scored on the ground with 11:37 remaining, and Malachi Norman converted the extra point to extend the lead to 21-7.

From there, Daphne’s defense finished what it started.

After surrendering Carver’s first-quarter touchdown, the Trojans held the Wolverines scoreless for the remainder of the game.

King pointed specifically to tackling as one of the biggest improvements from Daphne’s season opener.

“We tackled well on defense,” King said. “We missed a lot of tackles last week, and you saw the guys come up and make some great tackles tonight.”

Segar said the offense understood the importance of rewarding a defense that continued to create opportunities.

“They’ve been stepping up all year,” Segar said. “They stepped up last game, and they stepped up tonight, so I knew we had to find opportunities, hit the holes, make the throws, and that’s what we did tonight.”

The victory moves Daphne to 1-1 ahead of its region opener at Alma Bryant next week. Carver-Montgomery also moves to 1-1 and will return home to face Auburn.

“Still got a lot of work to do,” King said. “But again, a positive tonight and hopefully it rolls over to next week.”

Primetime Performers

Christian Segar

Daphne Trojans | Quarterback

Notable Stats: 1 passing touchdown, 1 rushing touchdown

Segar was at his best when Carver forced him away from the original design of the play. The Wolverines generated consistent pressure, but Segar repeatedly escaped the pocket, extended plays and found receivers after coverage began to break down.

His second-quarter touchdown scramble gave Daphne its first lead of the night and became the play that shifted control of the game toward the Trojans.

Tay Young

Daphne Trojans | Running Back

Notable Stats: 1 receiving touchdown, 1 rushing touchdown

Young accounted for two of Daphne’s three touchdowns.

His scoring reception provided the answer after Carver took an early 7-0 lead, while his fourth-quarter rushing score finally gave the Trojans separation after the game remained within one possession throughout the third.

Defining Moments

Carver faces fourth-and-27

Impact Rating: 8.5

Carver’s penalty problems were one of the most significant factors throughout the night, and no possession illustrated that better than the sequence that left the Wolverines facing fourth-and-27.

Rather than building on the momentum from their first-quarter touchdown, Carver repeatedly found itself trying to overcome long down-and-distances.

Young provides the insurance score

Impact Rating: 8.0

Carver remained within striking distance at 14-7 through the entire third quarter.

Young’s rushing touchdown with 11:37 remaining in the fourth finally created a two-score advantage and allowed Daphne to close the game from a position of control.

Obscure Observations

  • Both school bands were loud and active before kickoff, throughout the game and at halftime, adding to a lively Friday night atmosphere at Jubilee Stadium.
  • Daphne’s student section remained especially engaged, directing chants and encouragement toward the Trojans’ offensive and defensive units throughout the night.
  • Special teams also played a quieter but important role for Daphne. The Trojans consistently forced Carver to operate from less favorable field position, making it even harder for a penalty-plagued Wolverines offense to sustain drives.
  • Carver’s sideline remained visibly energetic midway through the third quarter despite trailing 14-7, but the physical toll of the game became more noticeable late in the period as multiple defensive players began dealing with cramping.
